ELIXIR

EOSC-hub Competence Centre

ELIXIR is an intergovernmental organisation with a mission to unite Europe’s leading life science organisations in managing and safeguarding the increasing volume of data generated by publicly funded research.

ELIXIR coordinates, integrates and sustains bioinformatics resources – such as databases, computational services, applications and training – across its member states and enables users in academia and industry to access what is vital for their research. The goal of the organisation is to coordinate these resources so that they form a single infrastructure. This infrastructure makes it easier for scientists to find and share data, exchange expertise, and agree on best practices. Ultimately, it will help them gain new insights into how living organisms work.

Ambition

This competence centre will enable ELIXIR to establish an ELIXIR Compute Platform (ECP) which allows ELIXIR cloud and data providers to share cloud compute and storage capacity to replicate and share reference datasets with each other and with their users.

Progress

The Competence Centre completed the development and deployment of the service Reference Data Set Distribution Service (RDSDS) and several ELIXIR reference datasets are now available through the service. The alignment between ELIXIR and the EOSC AAI has been improved, via technical and strategic developments within the EOSC-hub and AARC2 projects. A particular technical highlight is the ELIXIR AAI integration with two ELIXIR OpenStack providers (De.NBI & EMBL-EBI) which in turn enabled EOSC-compatible EGI Check-in users to access compute services via the ELIXIR AAI.
