In the last decade, we have been witnessing an extreme proliferation of all kinds of IT platforms for environmental research, from HPC code frameworks optimized at the system level to user-friendly web portals for data management. This environmental computing workshop focuses on the most critical phase in creating such platforms: the transition from the prototype stage to the production stage, where only the best infrastructures and systems survive. Starting from the question: “Why do some platforms survive this transition and others not?”, we highlight success strategies for e-Infrastructures in this workshop.
The discussion will cover a broad range of platforms (e.g. software frameworks, web portals, or other products), and focuses on key factors increasing the usefulness, usability and actual utilization. Our aim is to help the participants to optimize their future projects from the very beginning and maximize the success rate in supporting scientists. Key aspects shall not be restricted to the technical implementation, but also include actual methods of communicating the platform contents/capabilities to users, from documentation to dissemination and workshops.
